HDB Eases Subletting Policy

The government is relaxing the HDB's sub-letting policy which will see some 645,000 flats immediately eligible for sub-letting. The changes were announced by Minister for National Development, Mah Bow Tan, in Parliament on Saturday, 3 March 2007.

The office of the Commissioner of Charities has launched in February 2007 the Charity Portal, to provide a convenient one-stop 'paper-less' process for application for charity status and IPC status. The web address is www.charities.gov.sg .

In a press release dated 22 February 2007, the Law Faculty of NUS has appointed a new Advisory Board charied by Professor Tommy Koh. Other prominent members of the board include President of the Law Society, Senior Counsel Mr Philip Jeyaretnam, Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Senior Counsel Ms Indranee Rajah and Member of Parliament, Senior Counsel Mr K Shanmugam.

Singapore Budget 2007: Impact On Legal Practices

The Singapore Budget 2007 has some goodies specifically directed at the legal industry. To encourage international aribtration, approved law firms will be granted a 50% income tax exemption on qualifying incremental income derived from international arbitration work. This scheme will be available from 1 July 2007 to 30 June 2012. The incentive duration will be up to five years. The Ministry of Law will release further details by May 2007.
Competition Commission Consults on Proposed Favourable Decision on Qantas-Orangestar Cooperation Agreement

On 25 April 2006, the Cooperation Agreement between Qantas and Orangestar was notified to the Competition Commission of Singapore (CCS) for a decision on whether it infringes section 34 of the Competition Act (Act). The CCS is of the view that the Cooperation Agreement between Qantas and Orangestar does not infringe section 34 of the Act. The CCS is conducting a public consultation, which takes place from 13 to 27 February 2007, on its draft notice of decision.
