Professor Walter Woon Appointed Second Solicitor-General of Singapore

Professor Walter Woon Cheong Ming was appointed as Second Solicitor-General on 3 October 2006.

Professor Walter Woon Cheong Ming graduated in 1981 with First Class Honours from the National University of Singapore’s (“NUS”) Faculty of Law. He then joined the teaching staff at the Faculty of Law in NUS and went on to obtain a First-Class Honours two years later at Cambridge University, where he did his Masters of Law on a scholarship. He was called to the Singapore Bar in 1985.
Subsequently he became the NUS law faculty’s Vice-Dean, and was made a Professor of Law on 1 Feb 1999. He also taught at the Singapore Society of Accountants for eight years till 1991. A prolific writer, he has authored several books on company law, commercial law and the Singapore legal system, as well as two novels.

As Nominated Member of Parliament from 1992 to 1996, Professor Woon played the pioneering role in introducing the Maintenance of Parents Bill, which today remains the only Act passed by Parliament since 1965 that was not initiated by the Government. Professor Woon was the Legal Adviser to the President and Council of Presidential Advisors from 1995 to 1997. He was seconded to the Foreign Service in Sep 1997 and has served as Singapore's Ambassador to Belgium and as Singapore's Ambassador to Germany before his appointment as Second Solicitor-General.
