Posted on Tuesday, March 23, 1999 - 04:00 PM
In December 1998, a change in legislation liberalised rules on lawyers advertising. The first advertisements by lawyers appeared in the Straits Times on 23 March 1999.
Law firms were allowed to advertise through a change in legislation in December 1998. The first advertisements were released in a special legal supplement of The Straits Times on 23 March 1999.
The first seven law companies that advertised were: David Chong & Co; Drew & Napier; Colin Ng & Partners; Engelin Teh & Young; CW Lee.Peng.Chia.Philip; Ramdas & Wong; and Harry Elias Partnership.
Although in the past lawyers could place advertisements, these were limited to legal journals and related publications and even so, only limited details were permitted. With the liberalisation of rules on lawyers advertising, local legal firms can now use the mass media such as television, newspapers and the internet to advertise.
