Signing of the Agreement between Singapore and India Concerning Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters

Singapore and India will be signing an Agreement concerning Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters in New Delhi today.


The Press Release states:

Singapore and India will be signing an Agreement concerning Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters in New Delhi today. The Agreement will be signed by Foreign Minister George Yeo, on behalf of the Government of Singapore, and the Home Minister, Mr Shivraj Patil, on behalf of the Government of India.

2 The Agreement provides a framework for cooperation between the Singapore and Indian authorities in the fight against terrorism and serious criminal offences. Singapore and India already share a common legal heritage based on the English common law and similar legislative codes in the area of criminal law and procedure. The Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement will further strengthen the close relationship between the law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies of the two countries. The Agreement will allow the legal and judicial authorities of each side to render assistance to the other side with respect to investigations into serious offences. Such assistance may include the provision of relevant documents and records and the obtaining of evidence from witnesses.

3 The Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement will enter into force 30 days after the date on which Singapore and India have notified each other in writing that their respective legal requirements have been complied with.
