MPA INTRODUCES LICENSING SCHEME FOR REGIONAL FERRY OPERATORS

In a further effort to enhance port security, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has introduced a licensing scheme for regional ferry operators.

Regional ferry operators already had adopted a set of safety and security measures. The new licensing regime formalises the need for compliance to the safety and security measures. This is important since ferry services are a popular mode of transport for travelling between nearby destinations in the region.

With effect from 1 January 2005, companies that operate regional ferry services are required to obtain a licence in order to provide such services in Singapore. Currently, there are six such regional ferry operators in Singapore and all six companies have obtained the licences.

This licensing scheme is part of our ongoing efforts to safeguard the security of the ferries and passengers.
