IBM opens its patent vault to developers
Posted on Wednesday, January 12, 2005 - 08:45 AM

IBM pledges to make available 500 patents for open source access marks a significant step forward for open standards, and at the same time gives Big Blue a foundation on which to build some of its own technologies.
In a press statement released on 11 January 2005, IBM quoting Dr. John E. Kelly, IBM senior vice president, Technology and Intellectual Property, stated "This is not a one-time event. While IBM will continue to demonstrate leadership in patent output, through measures such as today's pledge, we will increasingly use patents to encourage and protect global innovation and interoperability through open standards and we urge others to do so as well. We will work with the USPTO and other commentators and policy makers to ensure that the U.S. patent system continues to evolve to address the challenges of the Innovation Economy."

The pledged patents and further related information will be posted on IBM's website at http://www.ibm.com.
